There are a variety of air conditioning choices available today with the most recent being portable and split air conditioners. The mini split air conditioners are the most common type of air conditioning in Asia and parts of Europe and are quickly becoming more popular in North America. Below are lists of advantages and disadvantages for each type to help you determine which is best for your situation.
Portable Air Conditioner
Pros: Can be moved from room to room, can be used right out of the box (connect exhaust hose and vent out window or wall), window kit utilizes only a small part of the window so you can enjoy your view. Cons: Generally as noisy as a window AC with similar energy efficiency
ratings (SEER of 9), utilizes floor space and condensation requires drainage in humid environments similar to a dehumidifier. Common applications: bedrooms, apartments, deed restricted areas, and server rooms.
Pros: Quiet like central AC, very high energy efficiency ratings (SEER of 13 and higher) which costs 36%-59% less to operate than a room air conditioner, less expensive than expanding or installing a central AC system, installation is simpler than a central AC (should be completed by a certified HVAC technician and generally takes 1-2 hours), does not take up floor space or block a window and zoning is simple. Cons: More expensive than a portable AC, installation is more involved than a portable unit, requires the purchase of additional parts such as line sets for the refrigerant and a dedicated electrical circuit and the outdoor unit requires either an exterior wall or pad for placement. Common applications: sunrooms, garage conversions, bedrooms, family rooms and existing homes in which adding ducts would be expensive and/or disruptive.
