Air Conditioners America tested several portable air conditioners at our offices
to measure how cold each AC unit can perform in a room. This comparison helps you determine
which is the coldest unit that can meet your needs. For instance, if your room
temperature is 100 F and you would like to cool it down to 75 F then you will
need a unit that can drop the temperature by 25 degrees.
Highest Temperature Drop at Unit (higher
the better)
Recommendations: We highly recommend the higher powered Alen™, Amcor and Sunpentown portable air conditioners. These units performed the best in cooling our test room.
These units also produced the coldest air as measured at the air conditioner. We
do not recommend the Sunpentown WA-1220E or the DeLonghi PAC260 as these units performed
poorly in our cooling tests.
Test Methodology - Temperature Decrease at Unit
Each unit was tested on low fan speed without the exhaust hose attached to the unit to maximize the cooling effect. Two thermometers were used to verify the results and were placed
directly in front of the AC register to measure the lowest temperature. The AC unit was set to the lowest setting (62F) and
operated for 5 minutes before the temperature was recorded. The compressor for each model remained
"ON" throughout the entire test. (Note: Amcor PLM14000E was lowered to 64F - it's lowest setting).
